Mise-en-Scene

 Welcome back to my blog!

Welcome back! Today I'm going to be defining what could be arguably the most important aspect of film creation. Mise-En-Scene.

For brevity, I'm going to refer to Mise-En-Scene as MES from here on out. Let's begin! MES is in it's most basic definition, everything that goes into a film to make the final product, well, the final product. It is used by every film maker or playwrite, and involves the placement and stage design that give a play or film its feel. MES quite literally translates to 'setting the stage' in French, and its usage backs up that translation successfully. There are 6 elements of MES:

  • Lighting
  • Composition
  • Art Direction
  • Costuming
  • Makeup
  • Texture
Every aspect of MES contributes to the final piece in some way, with everything viewer sees in a shot representing at least one element of MES. The elements all work together to form the final product, and many of these elements often depend on one another for success, like a well-oiled machine.

Goodbye, and see you soon with another update!
